Overview

How a V-ring seals

A V-ring fits on a shaft and seals axially against a counterface. This differs from a radial seal lip running on the cylindrical shaft surface. Trelleborg describes counterfaces such as a shaft collar, thrust washer or bearing face. Trelleborg: Forsheda V-Ring.

Select by shaft diameter and fitted dimensions

Identify the shaft diameter first, then match it to the exact manufacturer’s shaft-range table. A V-ring’s free-state inside diameter is a different dimension from the shaft diameter. Also check the fitted axial width, counterface and clearance dimensions. SKF: V-ring dimensional table.

Example enquiry: “V-ring for a 30 mm shaft; existing VA designation to be confirmed; 1,500 rpm; assembly drawing attached.” This is an enquiry example, not confirmation that a particular V-ring size fits that application or is stocked.

Where the shaft diameter falls at a catalogue range boundary, follow that manufacturer’s table and selection notes. Do not transfer a nominal size or boundary rule between manufacturers without checking the drawing.

Application examples

SKF describes VA use in bearing arrangements such as electric motors, gearboxes and drives, and compact VL profiles for restricted spaces around labyrinth seals. SKF CR Seals Handbook.

For a motor-maintenance enquiry, send the shaft diameter and existing seal marking. For a gearbox, include the arrangement drawing and contamination exposure. Selection FAQs

Can I order using only the inside diameter of the loose V-ring?

Provide the actual shaft diameter and existing part designation too. Manufacturer tables distinguish shaft range from free-state seal diameter, so these measurements should not be substituted for each other. SKF: V-ring dimensional table.

Can VA, VS and VL be substituted directly?

Do not assume a direct substitution. Confirm the profile, fitted width and counterface requirements against the assembly drawing and the proposed part specification.

Which material and speed rating should I choose?

Include shaft speed, temperature and exposure conditions in the enquiry. Manufacturer limits can depend on material and retention arrangements. Can a V-ring replace my pressure-retaining seal?
