1. Record the seal marking and arrangement
Photograph the markings and both faces. Record the manufacturer reference, equipment model and installation orientation where available. Follow the equipment maintenance procedure for access and removal; this guide is an identification checklist, not an installation procedure.
2. Identify the three principal dimensions
For a radial shaft seal enquiry, provide shaft diameter, housing bore diameter and seal width, with units. The schematic shows these as d, D and b. Do not measure a flexible lip opening and assume that it equals the nominal shaft size.
Example format: “shaft 30 mm, housing bore 47 mm, seal width 7 mm.” These are illustrative enquiry dimensions, not stock availability or confirmation of fit. Include the housing drawing and full part number for review.
3. Match design and duty as well as dimensions
State the lip arrangement, dust-exclusion features and material code if known. Include lubricant, shaft speed, temperature, pressure difference and exposure to dust or water. SKF’s replacement guidance calls for a design and material suited to the original arrangement and operating conditions. SKF Industrial Shaft Seals: replacement guidance.
4. Describe the condition of the equipment
Report wear, leakage and visible shaft or housing damage. SKF notes that the replacement lip should not simply run on the same worn track; the appropriate remedy depends on the equipment and maintenance plan. Ask the responsible technician to assess the counterface before fitting a replacement. SKF Industrial Shaft Seals.
5. Prepare your quotation request
Send the complete marking, d × D × b and units, photos, quantity, equipment model, lubricant and operating conditions. Add your delivery postcode and required date. Indicate whether dimensions came from a drawing, housing or removed seal.
Common questions
Can two seals with the same dimensions be interchangeable?
Do not assume so. Profile, material, lip arrangement and service conditions also need to match.
Should I choose FKM automatically?
Use the specified material and actual conditions to guide selection. AKVT lists an FKM oil seal; enquire about the exact compound and profile rather than treating the material name as a universal upgrade.
